The Natt och Dag coat of arms

The Natt och Dag family first started to use their name in the middle of the 18th century. However, the coat of arms was prodly used both before and after 1625, the year when the family was introduced at Riddarhuset (the House of Nobility). In the 16th century the coat of arms was even engraved on the Swedish krona!
The coat of arms to the left is from the Middle Ages, but exactly how far back is only known by myth. The earliest known official document is from 1280 and is preserved at the National Archives of Sweden in Stockholm. Prior to that date one has to rely on Snorre Sturlasson (1179-1241) and Gabriel Anrep (1821-1907). They found it probable that a man called Sigtrygg was a Natt och Dag who in the year 1030 housed the Norweigan King Olav the Holy. Maybe he carried the Natt och Dag coat of arms even then!
Shown to the right is a picture of the Natt och Dag coat of arms as it was placed in Riddarhuset in Stockholm 1625. It it is still hanging on the wall there today and is the official coat of arms. The escutcheon is painted a bit obliqued and warped and likely Per Natt och Dag, who introduced the family, was slightly stressed when he arranged for its creation. He could not paint himself, but he must have had exceptional requirements to have it completed as fast as virtually possible.
The coats of arms to the left was specifically designed, with help from Riddarhuset, for the family’s 700 year anniversary in 1980. It may be found in 1980’s edition of Adelskalendern (statistics).
Sävjö kommun      To the right the Sävsjö municipality coat of arms is shown. As you can see it comprises the Natt och Dag coat of arms. The wall refers to the castle which is situated in the region and was owned by the family in the Middle Ages.
